Handler Policy & Guidelines

Last updated: June 1, 2026

The Handler service lets Owners (or a designated person) accompany an item during its rental. It exists primarily for high-value or skilled-use items — cinema cameras, drones, DJ rigs, complex tools — where on-site expertise protects both the gear and the Renter's outcome.

1. When to enable Handler

  • The item is worth more than $1,500
  • The item requires training or licensure (e.g. drones over 250g in Canada)
  • The item is fragile, complex, or easily misused

2. Handler responsibilities

  • Arrive on time at the agreed location.
  • Operate the equipment safely and within manufacturer guidelines.
  • Follow the Renter's creative direction within reason.
  • Carry any required licenses, certifications, or insurance.
  • Bring a backup of mission-critical accessories (spare batteries, cables) where practical.

3. Renter expectations

  • Treat the Handler as an independent professional, not a vendor employee.
  • Provide safe working conditions including breaks for rentals over 6 hours.
  • Do not ask the Handler to perform tasks outside the scope of the listing.

4. Fees

The Handler fee is set per day by the Owner. It is paid in addition to the rental fee and is non-refundable once the Handler arrives at the agreed location, except in cases of Handler no-show or misconduct.

5. Insurance

Handlers operating regulated equipment (e.g. Transport Canada Advanced drone pilots) must hold a minimum of $2M liability insurance and provide proof on request. RentOM does not provide professional liability insurance for Handlers.

6. Misconduct

RentOM may suspend Handler privileges for: failing to show up without 24 hours notice, operating equipment unsafely, harassment of any kind, or repeated negative reviews. Refunds in misconduct cases are at RentOM's discretion.

7. Tax status

Handlers are independent contractors. Earnings over CAD $30,000 in 12 months trigger GST/HST registration. RentOM issues annual income summaries to assist with tax filing.
